Generative AI in Practice: Essential Skills for Higher Ed Professionals

April 15 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am PDT
Generative AI in Practice Essential Skills for Higher Ed Professionals

About this Course

Higher education professionals are navigating rapid change, rising workloads, and increasing expectations to use generative AI with care and clarity. Many seek practical guidance that demonstrates the capabilities of these tools and how to apply them effectively without compromising their own expertise.

Have you ever wondered:

  • “Where do I begin with AI in my professional role?”
  • “How can I use these tools to support my work while keeping my voice and judgment central?”
  • “What kinds of prompts lead to useful, accurate results?”

This live, three-session series provides clear instruction, real examples, and hands-on demonstrations that help faculty and staff build confidence with tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Google Notebook, and Adobe Express. Each session is designed to show responsible and effective strategies that support idea generation, writing improvement, and visual communication, with accuracy, privacy, and integrity always in view. Participants receive guided demonstrations during each session along with practice activities they can complete on their own afterward.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this workshop, the participants will be able to:

  1. Apply generative AI tools to generate ideas, summarize readings, and synthesize multiple resources to support informed decision-making tasks.
  2. Use at least three structured prompting strategies to produce clearer concepts, stronger outlines, and well-organized starting points for professional or academic projects.
  3. Create and refine AI-generated images for presentations and institutional materials using iterative prompt techniques and quality-evaluation criteria.
  4. Request and incorporate AI-generated writing feedback to improve clarity, tone, and structure while maintaining original authorship and intent.
  5. Evaluate AI outputs for accuracy, bias, and limitations and apply responsible-use practices appropriate to their professional context.
  6. Use reusable prompts, templates, and workflow guides to extend AI-supported practices into ongoing projects beyond the training session.
  7. Demonstrate responsible AI use by selecting appropriate tasks for AI support and identifying when human judgment and verification are required.

This is not a technical lecture. It is an interactive learning space that supports professionals in applying generative AI thoughtfully and ethically in their everyday work.
